 The Origin of Margherita Pizza

Among many varieties available for pizza, Margherita pizza is the simplest and most scrumptious one. It is a Neapolitan dish that has tomatoes, fresh basil, mozzarella, extra-virgin oil, and salt. Just like its name, this type of pizza has royal connections in reality.

Queen Margherita of Savoy

Well, pizza is said to be originated long back in Naples as the food for people with low incomes. They would add tomatoes and cheese to the dough and then bake it. However, after the formation of Italy, King Umberto I, his wife Queen Margherita, visited Naples. It is said that the Queen of Savoy quickly got bored with the French cuisine presented to her. After this, she developed a liking for what local peasants ate. After this, she asked Raffaele Esposito, the renowned Neapolitan chef, to prepare three pizzas. One of them had garlic and the other had anchovies. However, she did not like any of them at all.

What she liked was cooked using tomatoes, basil and mozzarella. These ingredients also symbolize the colours in an Italian flag. Hence, the pizza came into existence, and the chef named it Margherita pizza after the queen.  After some days, she sent a thank you note by a Chamberlain. The note is still there on the wall of Pizzeria Brandi.
